#DAW24 - Your Story - Michael Gosden

Wednesday 9 October 2024

Where does your dyslexia story begin?

I’d always considered myself as 'slow' and stupid. From an early age, I would use diversionary tactics to avoid the written word. I didn’t get great grades in my exams and I thought that that was just the way my life was going to be.

I got a job working in a builder’s merchant and then applied to be a prison officer (for a bet!), I got on OK because there wasn’t much written work and it was more about people, however as I progressed through the ranks - paperwork became a more frequent part of my role.

After an attempt at passing a governor’s exam, I was asked by a friend (who was convinced that I would have nailed it), if I was dyslexic - I was horrified!

Is there an unexpected twist or turn in your story?

In my early 40's - I had an occupational psychological assessment and was shocked to learn that I was indeed 'fairly dyslexic'. I was given some extra support, and the following year I took the governor’s exam and passed.

I interviewed for a governor’s job and was successful. I ended up in charge of a specialised unit, the first of its kind in Europe.

After 26 years in the prison service, I left to start a brand-new career - talking for a living!

I am now an independent celebrant, delivering unique funerals, weddings and naming ceremonies. I also create bespoke visual tributes and other media.

What advice would you give to others on their dyslexia journey?

Never give up, draw upon your strengths and don't ever let obstacles get in your way - go around them!
