Empowerment Patron Theo Paphitis Visits Norbury Manor Primary

Wednesday 18 September 2024

On a sunny day in Croydon, Theo Paphitis, the British Dyslexia Association's (BDA) Empowerment Patron, visited Norbury Manor Primary School to raise awareness of our Dyslexia Friendly Quality Mark (DFQM). The mark framework provides ALL educators and learners with the strategies, skills and tools needed to experience success and achieve.

Welcomed warmly by Headteacher Sonia and SEN Co-ordinator George, Theo toured the school, which prides itself on its inclusive and nurturing approach to education. Sonia shared how her decision to pursue the DFQM was inspired by the progress of a dyslexic pupil attending specialist, external classes. She is now determined to ensure all pupils benefit from the same tools and strategies.

DFQM Educators

The DFQM framework equips schools with the knowledge and resources to better support dyslexic students, fostering self-esteem, raising resilience and a "can-do" mindset for all learners. It helps educators understand the needs of dyslexic individuals and what resources and learning strategies are available. Only schools who meet the high standards required are awarded the DFQM, signaling to parents, staff, and stakeholders that dyslexic pupils can thrive in their environment. During the visit, Theo and the BDA team explored the school's impressive facilities, including Blossom House, a specialist facility for deaf pupils, and a speech and language hub supporting children with complex communication needs. Theo shared his own experiences of school with pupils and emphasised that dyslexia does not limit potential.
